retropxssy is a musician, designer and party thrower from London. A woman with many fingers in many pies, as is the life of the DIY artist, she also makes videos, graphics, clothes and puts on her own live music events. On his BBC 6 Music show, Tom Robinson described retro’s music as being ‘as soft as a kitten, but as tough as a Doc Marten boot’. She explores womanhood in the middle of the moshpit. retro spent early childhood living near the site of Glastonbury Festival. Cheap tickets offered to local residents mixed music (and mud) deeper into her veins. retro’s music dances through a post-genre world. She blends alternative hip hop, with punk, UK Garage and sounds she doesn’t have a name for yet! retro is inspired by artists who push boundaries and aren’t afraid of being a little different, a little weird: The Prodigy, Odd Future, Awful Records, Amy Winehouse, Sevdaliza, Portishead – to name a few. retro suffered with chronic illnesses from a young age. When she started to make music in 2019, she found it was like a healing balm for her. A chance encounter with artist Hairymuffinman that year was a catalyst for retro’s creativity to bloom. He became her muse and introduced her to a community of East London artists who are all fiercely independent. With them she has thrived and achieved things she never thought she could. Highlights so far have been releasing her debut album, ‘Road Ahead’ digitally and on vinyl, performing across England and Europe and building her own events series: ‘retroparty’. The events offer a platform for other independent artists to blossom. She also has her own skateboarding themed show on Voices Radio. retro has received support from the BBC, Vans, Rough Trade, Earmilk and Ladygunn magazines. She has just returned from a trip with Vans where she DJ’d at House of Vans Mexico City.
